In 1985, United Way of Central Alabama began recognizing individuals who contributed over $1,000. The red feather was adopted as a symbol of service to the community and each Feather Association member is given a feather to wear as a symbol of their leadership giving.

Founded in 1982, the Builders Society recognizes those individuals with an even higher level of community participation. With their annual gift of $5,000-$9,999 Builders Society members provide financial support and create meaningful impact for others to follow.

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Central Alabama was founded in 1986 to recognize annual leadership giving at the $10,000 level and above. This society honors Alexis de Tocqueville who wrote so enthusiastically of the American spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common good. Members set the highest levels of participation and example. A $100,000 gift or more entitles and individual to membership in the national society.
