What is CPPW?

Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW), an initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is investing $372.8 million over two years to fund 44 communities around the country. Jefferson County Department of Health has been selected as a grantee for both obesity and tobacco prevention efforts. Jefferson County will receive $6.3 million to improve nutrition and physical activity with the goal of reducing obesity, and $7 million to reduce tobacco use. The grants are for two years. The awards are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (stimulus package).

The goal of CPPW is to support evidenced-based community efforts to make policy, systems, and environmental changes with a strategic focus on tobacco and obesity prevention. Preventing these chronic diseases is critical to reducing the costs associated with healthcare and to developing stronger, healthier people and communities.
