Join us in helping families make healthy choices

United Way of Central Alabama works towards a healthier community through strong partnerships with dedicated organizations. United Way is involved in on-the-ground programming fighting childhood obesity and focusing on healthy initiatives with funding from Federal, State and Foundation sources .

Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities

United Way and community partners are working to reverse childhood obesity by changing local policies and reshaping our environments to advance active living and healthy eating. Jefferson County is one of 50 cities across the country awarded this opportunity by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Safe Routes to School

The Safe Routes to School program creates and encourages safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for all children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bike to school.  This form of exercise plays a critical role in reversing the alarming nationwide trend of increased childhood obesity and inactivity.

Walking School Bus is a neighborhood-based program launched in three Birmingham public schools to encourage children to walk to school for physical activity and social interaction.
