Alabama United Way board members boost personal
pledges by 10%
JEREMY GRAY - News staff writer The Birmingham News
The 72 members of the United Way of Central Alabama's board of directors will increase their personal pledges by 10 percent to help the organization reach its 2009 Pacesetter campaign goal of $9.1 million.
That goal was announced during Thursday's campaign kickoff at the Harbert Center.
The campaign, which is a lead-in to the larger fall campaign, involves 33 businesses and organizations.
The drive comes as many of those who often gave to charity find themselves unemployed and, perhaps for the first time, in need of the help of food banks, said kick-off speaker Lori Abercrombie, who is the director of Dora-based food bank Mission of Hope.
"The number of people in that situation is continuing to grow," she said in an interview

Junior League of Birmingham and United Way of Central Alabama Create Partnership for Imagination Library
The Junior League of Birmingham and United Way of Central Alabama have entered into an exciting partnership to collaborate on the Imagination Library Program. As a result of the partnership, children in Central Alabama will receive the gift of books and develop a lifelong love of reading. The partnership was formalized at a signing on April 20, 2009.
The Imagination Library, a project of the Dollywood Foundation, provides a new hardback, age appropriate book each month to children from birth to age five who live in Jefferson County. The Junior League of Birmingham launched the program in Jefferson County in 2006 and to date more than 11,500 children have received books in the program. Working with the Junior League of Birmingham volunteers, United Way of Central Alabama hopes to expand the program throughout Central Alabama.
