On April 5, 2008 Birmingham churches, nonprofits, and government agencies worked together at Project Homeless Connect to deliver services to 487 people struggling to break out of the cycle of homelessness. Success stories include individuals that obtained state identification cards after years of failed attempts – an achievement that will open doors to jobs, housing, and medical care.

Over 700 engaged volunteers gave their time and talent to make those success stories possible. The success of Project Homeless Connect demonstrates what we can accomplish when we work together. The overwhelming demand for services shows the hard work ahead of us. Nevertheless, this unprecedented alignment of community resources and compassion indicates the tide is turning in Birmingham’s fight against homelessness.

Thanks to the 700 Birmingham area residents who gave of themselves to help their neighbors, one can look to our future with a newfound hope that we can change the face of homelessness in Central Alabama. On behalf of the 487 community members served at Project Homeless Connect, “Thank you, Birmingham!”
