Giving blood one time to the Red Cross can save up to three lives. With that statistic in mind, you really don’t need more reasons to donate blood. But just in case, please consider the following.
- Hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits. To give you a picture: the Red Cross has seen red cell demand from trauma centers climb by 10% in 2021 compared to 2019. That’s five times the growth of other facilities that provide transfusions. As a result of this shortage, some hospitals are delaying crucial patient care until the blood supply stabilizes.
- “There’s no substitute for blood. When patients receive lifesaving blood, it means that a generous donor cared enough to share the gift of life with a stranger,” said Annette Rowland, Communications Director of the Alabama and Mississippi Region of the American Red Cross. “Just an hour of your time makes a significant impact.”
- AND if you decide to donate blood now through July 31st, you’re eligible to receive a $10 Amazon.com gift card and a chance to win gas for a year!
Whether you’re doing it for the prizes, a family member or your community, know your donation saves lives. Schedule an appointment to give blood or platelets using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
The American Red Cross is a United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) partner agency. UWCA is currently partnering with the Red Cross to respond to the long-term relief from the spring tornadoes.
Fully vaccinated individuals, including staff and blood donors, will no longer need to wear masks. Unvaccinated individuals will continue to be required to wear masks and social distance. For more information, please see updated FAQs.
