DESCRIPTION:Stamp Out Hunger\, the annual drive that allows Postal Service employees to collect food donations for their communities\, will be held Saturday\, May 11. \nThe National Association of Letter Carriers leads the one-day event\, with help from USPS and other organizations. Since its launch in 1993\, Stamp Out Hunger has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive. \nTo participate\, customers are asked to fill a bag with healthful\, nonperishable food items and place it by their mailbox for mail carriers to pick up. During the drive\, postal employees collect the food and donate it to local food banks and pantries.

DESCRIPTION:Organized and scheduled as part of Older American’s Month\, this year’s annual Fraud Summit\, presented by United Way’s Area Agency on Aging and its Senior Medicare Patrol program\, is designed to inform seniors about scams to watch out for\, how to protect themselves and what to do if they discover or suspect that they’ve been violated. \nThe Fraud Summit will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, May 15th at the Hoover Senior Center (400 Municipal Drive\, Hoover\, AL 35216). Seniors and/or family members\, caregivers and professionals in fields related to aging are all welcome. \nThe popular community education event will feature a series of speakers\, who are all experts in their fields\, sharing valuable information and advice to help empower attendees to better protect themselves. Speakers include representatives from: \n\nHoover Police Department\, speaking on fraud and abuse.\nFBI Birmingham\, addressing internet scams and Artificial Intelligence.\nAlabama Securities Commission\, discussing how to safeguard savings and investments.\nCadence Bank\, with advice about online banking\, online shopping and text alerts.\nFMS Pharmacy\, addressing the safety and value of unregulated dietary supplements.\nAlabama’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program\, speaking on elder abuse and fraud in nursing homes.\n\nThe information and assistance available from Senior Medicare Patrol will also be discussed\, and time will be allotted for questions and answers. \nIn addition\, there will be an expo of event sponsors related to senior services; and staff from the Area Agency on Aging will be on hand to familiarize attendees with the agency’s many programs\, ranging from prescription drug assistance and caregiver support to nutrition counseling and legal services. \nThe Fraud Summit is a FREE event\, but advance registration is required. In celebration of our 100th anniversary\, we are constructing a Centennial Park in each of the six counties we serve. \nEach park will showcase standard primary elements\, thoughtfully customized to reflect the unique characteristics of its community and location. \nDONATE NOW  VOLUNTEER \n  \nLOCATION\nThe Centennial Park planned in Walker County will be located at 200 20th Street East\, Jasper\, AL. \nThis artist’s rendering shows a bird’s-eye view of the planned Walker County Centennial Park in Jasper.\n(Click to enlarge.)\n  \n  \nPARK FEATURES\n  \nOUTDOOR CLASSROOM PAVILION:\nOutdoor classrooms are excellent multi-use facilities for civic clubs\, church groups\, neighborhood associations and other groups. This pavilion will be outfitted with multiple picnic tables and other amenities to provide a safe\, covered location for gathering at the park. \nAMENITIES AND ELEMENTS:\nThe parks will include both fitness and play equipment\, such as swings\, pickle ball courts and other equipment for public use. Each park will have a variety of amenities customized to the needs of the community. There will also be other recreational amenities\, such as BBQ grills\, picnic tables\, benches and garden elements. \n \nHOW YOU CAN HELP\nUnited Way is seeking corporate/community partners who will invest in these community parks. The park construction will be a collaborative effort\, actively built through volunteer labor and supervised by United Way Hands On team members. We are seeking corporate/community partners who will sponsor the park and provide volunteers for construction. This project will require 30 to 60 volunteers. Sign up now to make a difference this tax season.\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTraining Details\nThis in-person training is designed for volunteers who can commit to at least 24 hours of service during the tax season\, available Monday through Friday\, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Please note that UWCA’s Tax Assistance is not available on evenings or weekends. \nIf you are unable to commit to volunteering or cannot attend the in-person training\, a recorded Zoom version will be available for registration starting in early December. \nTraining Format\nAll in-person trainings combine basic and advanced topics into one comprehensive class. If you are new to taxes\, you may choose to complete the basic training on Zoom as an introduction\, though it is not required. \nVolunteer Responsibilities\nAs a volunteer\, you will engage with clients\, ask questions\, and ensure accurate and complete tax returns are filed\, helping taxpayers access eligible credits. Throughout the process\, you will have access to on-site tax specialists for any questions related to filing. \nOnce certified\, you can choose your volunteering days and times that best fit your schedule\, within the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM\, Monday through Friday. \nRequirements\n\nTime Commitment: Volunteers must commit to at least 24 hours during the tax season\, available from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM\, Monday through Friday.\nCertification: Volunteers must complete IRS Certification prior to volunteering. At the end of the training\, you will be prepared to take the certification test.\nBackground Check: United Way covers the cost of the background check for all volunteers.

DESCRIPTION:The United Way Area Agency on Aging (UWAAA) Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program needs your help to sweeten the holidays for Boarding Home residents in Jefferson County! \nHome “Sweet” Home for the Holidays is an opportunity to provide a special treat to those who are not able to be with their loved ones this holiday season.  Volunteers are needed to DONATE desserts for the 40 participating boarding homes across the county. \nYou can drop off store-bought cakes\, cookies\, and pies beginning TUESDAY\, DECEMBER 17th thru WEDNESDAY\, DECEMBER 18th between 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Alice Williams Building\, Room 102. \nWe know the holidays can get busy and finding the time to drop off donations may become a juggling act! We will also be accepting donations using any grocery delivery service such as Instacart\, Shipt or Walmart if accessible.  If you are dropping off your treat\, please be sure to complete the donation form located on the documents tab of this opportunity. \nPlease register NOW to let us know if you are planning to donate items for our Boarding Home Residents!
