In 1891, a group of courageous women stepped up to care for the homeless children and mothers on the streets of Birmingham. Far ahead of their times, they established the city’s first orphanage and the beginning of child and family services in Alabama. More than 128 years later, Gateway continues our founders’ legacy of innovation and impact with a clear and simple mission: Gateway is a game changer for Alabama children and families.

We provide family counseling, foster care and financial counseling services based in the latest knowledge of trauma, brain science and behavioral healthcare. This results in proven outcomes that strengthen families and therefore communities.
