United Way Housing Alliance

Safe, stable, affordable housing

Helping Make Housing Happen

Since 2014, United Way of Central Alabama’s (UWCA) Housing Alliance has been approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a Regional Intermediary, which oversees and supports HUD-approved Housing Counseling agencies that serve individuals and families in need of housing assistance. Based on the belief that safe, stable, affordable housing is a basic human right, we are on a mission to increase the organized capacity of our Housing Counseling agencies to improve housing access and stability in their communities.

UWCA Housing Alliance member agencies provide an array of housing education and counseling services to consumers in search of a home or in need of information about financing, maintaining, renting or owning a home. Our counselors also provide support to individuals who are homeless — or at risk of losing their homes — through homeless-prevention, rental and foreclosure counseling.

What We Do

As a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Regional Intermediary, United Way of Central Alabama’s Housing Alliance is instrumental in bringing together all the pieces necessary for individuals and  families to secure or maintain housing. We facilitate the distribution of funds to a network of ten HUD-approved Housing Counseling agencies across the Southeast, and help these organizations with administrative functions — ensuring each agency meets HUD standards and client needs in order to maximize resources, help more people realize their housing goals and create positive change in its community.

Our member agencies help low to moderate-income consumers in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee achieve their housing goals by providing group education as well as individualized, one-on-one housing counseling.

The wide range of housing programs and services they offer include:

  • Financial capability and budget management.
  • Mortgage delinquency and default counseling.
  • Pre-purchase workshops.
  • Individualized homeownership counseling.
  • Rental and tenancy information.
  • Fair housing guidance.
  • Reverse mortgage (HECM) counseling.
  • Homeless prevention support.
  • Predatory lending education.
  • Foreclosure prevention options.
  • Disaster preparedness and recovery assistance.
