211 Day: A Reminder that Help Is Just a Phone Call Away

Call 211if you need help before, during or after a disaster.

Every year on February 11th (2/11), we recognize 211 Day — a time to highlight the impact of the essential service named after its easy-to-remember three-digit phone number. Whether someone is facing financial hardship, struggling with housing or seeking mental health support, 211 is a free, confidential referral service that connects individuals and families to critical resources when they need it most.

One Call, Countless Solutions

In 2024 alone, 211 provided more than 95,000 referrals and responded to 37,253 calls – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated specialists who listen, guide and connect people to potentially life-changing support. When asked what inspires her, one of those specialists Bobbie Cole, who personally answered more than 8,000 calls last year, replied:

“It’s the feeling of helping the community…when someone says how grateful they are for the resources and support you provided when they really needed someone to help and listen — it’s everything.”

What Are People Calling 211 About?

Last year, the top needs among callers included:

  • Utility assistance – 43%
  • Housing assistance – 32%
  • Food and meals – 14%
  • Transportation – 8%
  • Other needs – 3%

Through programs such as Ride United, 211 also arranged 3,494 Lyft rides to help individuals without transportation access the essential services they needed.

Real People, Real Help

People turn to 211 for many reasons, often during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Here are just a few examples.

  • A homeowner facing unexpected storm damage may not know where to turn for emergency repairs. A call to 211 can connect them with disaster relief services and temporary housing assistance.
  • Someone struggling with utility bills may be unsure of available assistance programs. 211 specialists can provide referrals to local organizations that offer financial aid.
  • A college student feeling overwhelmed with anxiety and depression may not know how to access affordable mental health support. Through 211, they can find counseling services that fit their budget and schedule.

These are just a few of the many situations where 211 serves as a bridge to vital resources.

Why 211 Matters

211 is more than just an information line; it’s a support system that empowers people to navigate life’s challenges. On 211 Day, we not only celebrate the impact of this service but also raise awareness so that more people understand that help is just a call away.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, don’t hesitate to dial 211. Help is available, and no one has to face their struggles alone.
