Nonprofits play a crucial role in making Birmingham one of the most philanthropic cities in the nation. The Birmingham Business Journal (BBJ) Nonprofit Awards, held on March 20th at Kress BHM Ballroom, were a time to honor the outstanding nonprofits and the individuals and organizations supporting them.

At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), we are proud to have nominated – and to be associated with – some of the incredible leaders and organizations whose efforts are making a lasting impact on our community

Most Impactful Project: United Way Hands On

United Way Hands On was named a finalist in the “Most Impactful Project” category for its Centennial Parks program. This volunteer-driven initiative transforms public spaces across six counties into vibrant parks with outdoor learning areas and event pavilions.

To date, three parks have been completed in Jefferson, Shelby and Walker counties, with three additional sites in progress. Designed with community input to ensure they meet local needs, these parks have already strengthened community relationships and created lasting recreational spaces.

Most Supportive Corporate Citizen: Regions Bank

Regions Bank earned the title of “Most Supportive Corporate Citizen” for its unwavering commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism. In 2023, the bank contributed $22.5 million in philanthropic donations and sponsorships, including $7.9 million to more than 150 United Way agencies.

Notable leaders playing prominent roles in advancing UWCA’s mission include, but are not limited to, John M. Turner, Jr., Regions’ Chairman, President and CEO. Turner served as Board Chair of UWCA from 2021 to 2022 and was a former Chair of UWCA’s Pacesetter and Tocqueville Society campaigns.

Additionally, Leroy Abrahams, Head of Community Engagement, served as the Campaign Chair for the 2024 United Way Campaign. Under his leadership, the campaign raised $38.7 million, which was an impressive $1.2 million beyond the original goal.

Top Consultant: Kathryn Miree

Kathryn Miree of Kathryn W. Miree & Associates Inc. was named “Top Consultant” for her decades of work in nonprofit philanthropy. Kathryn’s expertise has been invaluable to UWCA, particularly in the success of the Forever United campaign, which raised $50 million for UWCA’s endowment in just one year and continues today.

As she told the Birmingham Business Journal, “Donors in the Birmingham community are some of the most generous in the country. For a modest-sized community, our donors have made extraordinary investments.”

Philanthropic Couple of the Year: Linda and Jeff Stone

Linda and Jeff Stone, “Philanthropic Couple of the Year”

Linda and Jeff Stone are “Philanthropic Couple of the Year” for their extraordinary commitment to United Way and the Birmingham community. Together, they played a key role in helping grow UWCA’s endowment to more than $100 million. This achievement secures long-term support for critical programs across Central Alabama.

Jeff, retired Executive Vice President at Brasfield & Gorrie, has been a dedicated supporter and leader of UWCA for years, chairing the Tocqueville Society in 2015 and serving as Legacy Gift Chair for four consecutive years, as well as Annual Campaign Chair. Linda, a retired pediatrician, has championed education and health initiatives through both volunteer service and philanthropy. Together, the Stones have modeled what long-term community leadership looks like, encouraging others to invest in a stronger Central Alabama.

Looking Ahead

This year’s BBJ Nonprofit Awards offered a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people come together to support one another. We’re proud to stand alongside these honorees and so many others who are helping strengthen our community.
