Celebrating Women’s History Month

March 1st marks the start of Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the achievements, resilience and contributions of women throughout history. Established to honor the pivotal roles women have played in shaping society, this month is a time of celebration and recognition.

To celebrate, United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) is shining a spotlight on members of our Women United Donor Society. With a mission to inspire, educate and motivate women to become positive change-agents in our community, Women United fosters impact through philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism. Throughout the month, we look forward to sharing their stories and the incredible ways they are making a difference.

Katie Wells

Katie Wells has spent the past 20 years building a successful career at Brasfield & Gorrie, a company deeply committed to strengthening communities. Throughout her tenure, she has embraced that mission wholeheartedly, finding purpose in giving back through United Way.

A defining part of Katie’s journey has been the network of strong, driven women she has connected with. Surrounded by colleagues who lead with passion and dedication, she has witnessed firsthand the power of collective impact. Together, they have not only supported one another’s growth but have also created meaningful change in the community, making service a truly rewarding experience.

As a woman in the construction industry, Katie finds special meaning in Women’s History Month. It’s a celebration of the resilience and courage that women have demonstrated in breaking through barriers and thriving in this industry.

“Every day, I draw inspiration from the trailblazing women who have come before me, whose grit and resolve have made it possible for us to carve out our own spaces in this industry. This month serves as a reminder of the strength, tenacity and grit required to succeed and make a mark in our industry and communities. Women’s History Month inspires me to continue pushing forward, proving that resilience and courage are the foundations upon which we build our successes.”

Kelly Morrison

Kelly Morrison’s personal journey with United Way of Central Alabama began during the 9/11 campaign. During this time, she served as a Loaned Executive. That experience inspired her to take on roles such as serving on Visiting Allocation Teams (VATs), leading as a United Way Campaign Chair and contributing to multiple Tocqueville Society Committees. Most recently, Kelly and her husband, Ron, served as the Tocqueville Chairs for the 2024 campaign.

In addition, through years of involvement, Kelly has witnessed firsthand the profound impact United Way has on the Birmingham community, reinforcing her passion for giving back. Beyond her professional and philanthropic work, Kelly finds inspiration in the strong women who have shaped history and her own life—especially her mother.

“Looking back on the women that have changed and impacted our country makes me consider the women who have impacted me personally. My mother was a working mom that never missed a beat and managed to “get it all done.” As I have grown older, I realize how much of my mom I have in me. I strive to “get it all done” and be the best that I can be while balancing everything that life throws my way.”

In her free time, she enjoys pushing her limits—both professionally and physically. A dedicated runner, she recently completed the New York City Marathon and is gearing up for the London Marathon this April.

For Val, Women’s History Month is a time to be intentional in recognizing the profound ways women shape the world.

“Women’s History Month is a time for me to be more intentional in considering all the wonderful ways women positively impact our world. Our contributions are felt all year long, but it’s nice to have a set aside time to reflect and celebrate women.”

Outside of work and service, Val finds joy in spending quality time with her husband and kids as well as roller skating in her free time.
