At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), we believe that every individual has the power to create change in their community. Meet Kamryn (Kam) Bendolph, a passionate advocate for youth empowerment, who is inspiring Birmingham’s Youth through service.
Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, Kamryn is a dedicated data analyst at Brasfield & Gorrie and a recent MBA graduate from UAB. While at Birmingham-Southern College, she excelled as a track athlete and now enjoys running in her free time. Beyond her professional commitments, Kam is also an active member of the Railroad Park Junior Board and has a playful orange tabby named Felix.
Kam’s journey with United Way began when a coworker invited her to an event hosted by the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society, and she enthusiastically accepted. The J. Mason Davis Leadership Society is committed to fostering diversity and opportunity by bringing together influential African American leaders. Recently, the group hosted a transformative event where middle school students learned vital business etiquette skills. Kamryn joined nine other adults to mentor about 50 eager students, providing them with essential tools for their future careers.
Participants engaged in discussions about:
- Professional behavior and clothing expectations.
- The art of a firm handshake and maintaining eye contact.
- Effective self-introduction techniques.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Kamryn’s involvement with UWCA also allowed her to volunteer at a local elementary school, reading to K-2 students. Each child received a picture book, creating a personal connection to reading. Kam encouraged the students to ask questions, sharing insights about her own career path and aspirations.
Reflecting on her experiences, Kam noted how meaningful it is for children to see role models who look like them. “They want to see people who look like them and find out what they’re doing with their lives,” she said in an interview with Bham Now. “That way, when they get older, they can say ‘she can do it; I can do it, too.’”
Personal Growth Through Volunteering
Kamryn’s volunteer journey with Birmingham’s youth has profoundly impacted her own growth as a young professional. Participating in the business etiquette class opened her eyes to the different needs within the community. She recalled that, growing up, she didn’t have access to similar resources.
As a Black woman navigating a predominantly white corporate environment, Kam emphasizes the importance of perseverance: “I’m a Black girl in a predominantly white company, and I can make a name for myself. So can you. You just have to stick to the course. Eventually you’ll be able to take care of yourself and do big things.’”
Get Involved with United Way
Kamryn’s story exemplifies the power of community engagement and the importance of role models for our youth. When asked what advice she would give to others considering volunteering, her response was clear. “Do it!” she said.
