New Affinity Group Launched-Women United

United Way of Central Alabama, Inc. has relaunched it’s women’s affinity group to- promote in bigger bolder ways- the critical work women are leading in Central Alabama. The Women United launch was held recently at Brasfield & Gorrie where more than 130 current donors and volunteers celebrated. Planning committee members are Lessie Brady, Denise Canfield, Mittie Cannon, Jill Deer, Shirley Fagan, Eleanor Griffin, Ann Haas, Kimberly Jackson, Koko Macklin, Carla Robertson and Lindsay Sinor.

Women United also announced its new signature effort, “Project Welcome Home”, a partnership with United Way’s Individual Development Account Program (IDA) and Habitat Humanity to provide essential household items to new women homeowners. These new homeowners committed their savings, $2,000, for their home down payment it’s combined with local and federal matching grants to make the down payment. The new homeowners who often have children have little left to buy essential household items most take for granted. As the program grows, Women United and Project Welcome Home will provide big ticket items such as appliances.

Women United is a community of women giving the leadership levels of $1,000 or more each year to United Way of Central AL. It’s mission is to inspire, educate and motivate women to become positive change-agents within the community through philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism.

Central Alabama’s Women United is one of 160 across the globe. Almost 70.000 women leaders are working through United Way to build stronger communities. Over the past decade, this critical community within United Way has driven explosive growth, by well over doubling the total number of women engaged, and nearly tripling total fundraising since its inception.

United Way of Central Alabama serves Jefferson, Shelby, Walker, Blount and St. Clair Counties by providing solutions for the most important needs in the community.
