Pathways: A Place for Women and Children Facing Homelessness to Begin Again

Jennifer Sumner, Executive Director of Pathways giving a tour to Women United Members.

Much more than a shelter, Pathways provides a foundation for rebuilding. As Birmingham’s longest-running agency serving women and children experiencing homelessness, the United Way of Central Alabama partner agency provides not only a safe place to sleep but the resources and support needed to move forward.

Members of Women United recently toured Pathways; and as they gathered in the lobby in the heart of downtown Birmingham, they observed the daily rhythm of the organization at work. Some women headed to classes or ran errands, while mothers dropped their children off at the Early Learning Center before heading to work or appointments. For many facing homelessness, security and routine can feel elusive. But Pathways changes that by meeting immediate needs first and then offering a stable foundation to build on for the long term.

Breaking Barriers with Early Childhood Education

Childcare is essential, but without stable housing or a job, it’s often impossible for women in distress to access. Inside Pathways’ Early Learning Center, soft lighting, soothing colors and comfortable rugs create a safe space where children can grow, explore and thrive. But this is more than just daycare — it’s a Montessori-inspired program that provides structure, social-emotional learning and a sense of normality. Best of all, it’s completely free for families experiencing homelessness.

Emily Bloyd, Pathways’ Early Learning Center Director and dedicated advocate for Montessori education knows the value of this approach. Before joining the staff at Pathways, she had seen how effective the Montessori methodology could be, yet how inaccessible it was for the children who needed it most. “We are changing the face of Montessori at Pathways by offering it to children who are experiencing homelessness,” she said.

Since joining Pathways two years ago, she has helped fully transform the classrooms into Montessori spaces, staffed by certified teachers for every age group. The results speak for themselves: Pathways’ Early Learning Center is now the first five-star-rated preschool in Birmingham and only the second in Jefferson County, as recognized by Alabama Quality STARS.

“Heart, good teachers and dedicated staff can make all the difference,” – Emily Bloyd, Director of Pathway’s Early Learning Center

More Than the Basics: Investing in Women’s Futures

Many women first connect with Pathways through the Day Center, which provides emergency daytime shelter along with showers, laundry facilities, warm meals and more. A computer lab, case management services and life skills classes help guests regain stability and build a path to self-sufficiency.

For those staying longer, Pathways provides additional resources that recognize the importance of dignity and self-confidence. The clothing boutique is a prime example. Women earn shopping sprees by attending life skills classes, allowing them to choose outfits that help them feel prepared for job interviews or simply everyday life. A small step, but a meaningful one toward independence.

When reflecting on the tour, one Women United member said, “It’s important for me to learn more about the programs in Birmingham and understand how I can advocate for women who need these resources.” That’s exactly the point of these types of tours – to inspire understanding and engagement at whatever level a member is motivated.
