The Many Ways the Area Agency on Aging Helps Seniors

From providing hot meals and exercise programs at senior centers to helping individuals navigate the complexities of Medicare, United Way’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is dedicated to serving seniors and people with disabilities.

Since joining United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) in 2016 and partnering with the Alabama Department of Senior Services, AAA has expanded its reach, offering a range of innovative, no-cost services to eligible residents of Jefferson County. As the needs of the community continue to evolve, AAA is committed to ensuring timely and effective support for those who need it most. In 2024 alone, AAA responded to more than 38,000 requests for help from nearly 11,000 individuals.

Services Offered by AAA

AAA provides a wide range of services tailored to seniors and people with disabilities. These offerings include:

  • Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC): Provides a one-stop resource for information on, and referrals to, a wide range of senior and disability services.
  • Alabama Cares: Offers support for family caregivers, including respite care, training and resources.
  • Homemaker & Personal Care Program: Assists eligible individuals with daily living tasks and light housekeeping, helping them to live independently.
  • Legal Assistance: Provides help with civil issues such as elder abuse, government benefits and housing concerns.
  • Nutrition Counseling: Offers personalized consultation on healthy nutrition to support overall wellness and individual goals.
  • Older Relative Caregiver Program: Provides resources and support for grandparents and other older relatives who are primary caregivers to children.
  • Ombudsman Program: Advocates for residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and boarding homes, ensuring their rights and well-being are protected.
  • Preventive Health & Fitness: Offers exercise programs and health education to help seniors stay active and healthy.
  • Senior Medicare Patrol: Educates Medicare beneficiaries on how to identify and avoid healthcare/financial fraud and scams.
  • Senior Nutrition: Provides nutritious meals and opportunities for seniors to stay active while building new social connections through area senior centers.
  • SenioRx: A statewide program offering assistance with the cost of prescription medication for qualified individuals being treated for chronic conditions.
  • State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP): Provides expert, unbiased guidance to help seniors navigate Medicare options and benefits based on their individual needs.
