These After-School Programs Are Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders

At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), we recognize that learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends. A safe, enriching environment during after-school hours plays a vital role in shaping a child’s future. In Alabama, however, 25% of children aged six to 17 are not involved in extracurricular activities, and more than a quarter of high school students report experiencing poor mental health most or all the time.

That’s why we support after-school and mentoring programs that foster academic success, social development and emotional well-being. In 2024 alone, nearly 35,000 Central Alabama youth participated in before and after-school programs made possible through our partner agencies.

The following are four of our many dedicated partner agencies that are making a meaningful impact on the lives of our youth.

A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club

A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club held a Day of Mentoring last summer with UWCA’s J. Mason Davis Leadership Society.

For nearly 60 years, the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club has provided a safe, supportive space for youth in Birmingham and Bessemer. More than an after-school program, it fosters confidence, leadership and personal growth. Youth aged six to 18 benefit from mentorship, tutoring and a variety of programs in health, education, the arts and sports — all for just $8 a year.

Founded by Birmingham entrepreneur A.G. Gaston, the Club continues Mr. Gaston’s legacy by equipping young people with the tools they need to thrive.

A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club empowers its members by providing responsibilities and opportunities to make decisions. Through both guidance and action, the club helps our youth develop into responsible, caring and engaged citizens.

Girls Inc. of Central Alabama

Girls Inc. of Central Alabama goes beyond after-school programming to create a lasting impact on young girls’ lives. With locations in Crestwood and Jasper, Girls Inc. offers STEM education, financial literacy, leadership development and life skills training.

Girls Inc. Provides participants with a variety of opportunities for personal and academic growth. Programs such as Eureka!, a five-year immersive STEM experience and the Walker County Program, which provides enriching summer activities for girls in grades one to nine, are just a few examples of ways that young girls build confidence and prepare for the future. Through mentorship, career readiness and confidence-building initiatives, Girls Inc. prepares girls to excel in all aspects of life as strong, smart and bold individuals.

“One of the great things about Girls Inc. is that we bring girls together from all across the Birmingham community,” said Connie Hill, President and CEO of Girls Inc. “That helps you understand that not everyone’s life situation is the same as yours and it makes you more comfortable meeting people.”
