United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), in partnership with the Alabama Association of Nonprofits, recently hosted a Young Professionals Mixer to bring together emerging leaders from across Central Alabama’s nonprofit sector. Held on UWCA’s campus, the event offered a space to connect, share ideas and discuss how collaboration and strong leadership drive community impact.
As a statewide leader in professional development, the Alabama Association of Nonprofits equips nonprofit professionals with the tools to lead effectively and build resilient organizations. Deirdre Clark, Director of Membership and Community Engagement, attended the event and shared lessons from more than a decade of championing growth and collaboration across the sector.
The mixer attracted professionals who are passionate about pushing their organizations forward and deepening their impact. Attendees explored upcoming volunteer opportunities, reflected on the role of their day-to-day work in regional progress and made meaningful peer connections along the way.
“Attending networking events like this is a great opportunity to connect with others in the field and learn more about how local agencies are making a difference,” said United Way’s Vice President of Community Impact, Shakeitha Tatum.

Encouraging young professionals to stay engaged, she highlighted opportunities with United Way, including the Visiting Allocation Team (VAT) and LEARN United, which offer hands-on ways to apply leadership skills, build local partnerships and drive change.
For many, the event reinforced how valuable it is for nonprofit professionals to connect and work together toward shared goals. “It was encouraging to meet others who are early in their nonprofit careers but already making an impact,” said one attendee from IMPACT America. “There’s real value in knowing we’re part of a larger effort.”
