Marvell “Chip” Bivins, Jr., CPA
Chip Bivens is the Chief Audit and Compliance Officer for The University of Alabama System, the state’s largest higher education enterprise, which includes three institutions known for their prominent teaching, research, and service programs. In this role, Chip reports to the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees. He has held this position since January 2017.
Before joining the UA System staff, Chip had a 26-year career with Energen Corporation, where he spent 13 years as Vice President of Audit and Compliance. A Certified Public Accountant, he worked as an Audit Manager with Deloitte for 10 years before joining Energen. Chip also serves on the Board of Directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, where he is the Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of the Executive and Compensation Committees. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from the University of Alabama.
Chip and his wife Pam have three adult sons, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren. A native of Birmingham, Chip is active in his church and community. Chip and Pam are long-time supporters of United Way and are members of the Tocqueville Society and the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society. Chip serves on the United Way board as Chairman. His additional community involvement includes Leadership Alabama, Leadership Birmingham, and Vulcan Kiwanis. Chip has also served on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham, Oasis Counseling, Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Birmingham Urban League, and the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama. Chip and his family are members of Peace Baptist Church of Mulga, where he serves as Chairman of the Deacon’s Board, Youth Sunday School teacher, and Bible study teacher.
