DESCRIPTION:The Power of Us Begins Here.\nJoin United Way of Central Alabama as we launch the 2026 Campaign and celebrate the partnerships\, generosity and shared commitment that make lasting change possible across Central Alabama. \nThursday\, September 10\, 2026\nSheraton Birmingham Hotel\n11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. \nGuest Speakers\n \nShark attack survivor and adaptive technology advocate Lulu Gribbin\nLulu Gribbin\nLulu Gribbin’s life was forever altered after surviving a shark attack in the summer of 2024. Her first words after waking up from the first of her lifesaving surgeries were\, “I MADE IT.” Those words set the tone for her remarkable journey of recovery\, strength and tenacity. \nIn addition to rising above her physical challenges\, Lulu has worked to pass a bipartisan bill known as Lulu’s Law\, providing an alert system for shark sightings and attacks. She also founded the Lulu Strong Foundation to improve access to advanced prosthetics and therapeutic solutions for amputees. \nCurrently a senior at Mountain Brook High School\, Lulu has spoken before the Alabama State Legislature and at TEDx Youth. She has been featured on Good Morning America and Nightline and has shared her inspiring story with audiences of up to 19\,000 people. \n\n\nProfessional adaptive golfer Chris Biggins\nChris Biggins\nChris Biggins is a highly accomplished professional golfer\, skier and coach. Competitive tours have taken him as far as Australia\, Dubai and Kenya\, earning a ranking of 18th in the world and third in the United States among adaptive golfers. \nBorn with cerebral palsy\, Chris’s drive and athleticism also earned him a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Development Ski Team based in Park City\, Utah\, where he trained from 2014 to 2022. \nChris currently serves as Director of Player Development at the Country Club of Birmingham. Fred moved to Huntsville\, Alabama to attend Alabama A&M University. While living in Huntsville\, he became a reporter and photographer for the local NBC station. He is a member of the Gorgeous Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated\, honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi\, and 100 Black Men of America. He graduated Cum Laude from Alabama A&M University in May of 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications. In 2022\, Fred joined Birmingham City Schools as a Broadcast Communications Specialist after working nearly 10 years at WVTM 13 in Birmingham and four years at WAFF 48 in Huntsville. \nIn 2017\, Fred’s turned his hobby of flying drones into a business. Fred is the mastermind behind the brand SkyDavenport. In celebration of our 100th anniversary\, we are constructing a Centennial Park in each of the six counties we serve. \nEach park will showcase standard primary elements\, thoughtfully customized to reflect the unique characteristics of its community and location. \nDONATE NOW  VOLUNTEER \n  \nLOCATION\nThe Centennial Park planned in Walker County will be located at 200 20th Street East\, Jasper\, AL. \nThis artist’s rendering shows a bird’s-eye view of the planned Walker County Centennial Park in Jasper.\n(Click to enlarge.)\n  \n  \nPARK FEATURES\n  \nOUTDOOR CLASSROOM PAVILION:\nOutdoor classrooms are excellent multi-use facilities for civic clubs\, church groups\, neighborhood associations and other groups. This pavilion will be outfitted with multiple picnic tables and other amenities to provide a safe\, covered location for gathering at the park. \nAMENITIES AND ELEMENTS:\nThe parks will include both fitness and play equipment\, such as swings\, pickle ball courts and other equipment for public use. Each park will have a variety of amenities customized to the needs of the community. There will also be other recreational amenities\, such as BBQ grills\, picnic tables\, benches and garden elements. \n \nHOW YOU CAN HELP\nUnited Way is seeking corporate/community partners who will invest in these community parks. The park construction will be a collaborative effort\, actively built through volunteer labor and supervised by United Way Hands On team members. We are seeking corporate/community partners who will sponsor the park and provide volunteers for construction. This project will require 30 to 60 volunteers. SUMMARY:Stamp Out Hunger 2024
DESCRIPTION:Stamp Out Hunger\, the annual drive that allows Postal Service employees to collect food donations for their communities\, will be held Saturday\, May 11. \nThe National Association of Letter Carriers leads the one-day event\, with help from USPS and other organizations. Since its launch in 1993\, Stamp Out Hunger has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive. \nTo participate\, customers are asked to fill a bag with healthful\, nonperishable food items and place it by their mailbox for mail carriers to pick up. During the drive\, postal employees collect the food and donate it to local food banks and pantries.
