- Online allocations application period ends August 20th at 5 p.m. CST.
- Community Crisis Fund Request for Proposals released.
- Community Crisis Fund grant opportunity opens September 1st.
- Deadline for responses to Community Grant applications is October 1st.
- VAT agency site visits occur from October 18th to 29th (virtual or in-person TBD).
- Allocations Hearing
- Agencies receive official notification of 2022 Allocations and Community Crisis Fund grant awards.
UWCA Community Crisis Fund Grant Opportunity: September 1st to October 1st
In response to the ongoing needs within Central Alabama resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of Central Alabama is offering the fourth phase of the Community Crisis Fund grant opportunity.
Grant applicants will be required to complete an application that contains the following sections: (1) Administrative/Contact Information; (2) Grant Detail; (3) Budget Detail; and (4) Budget Narrative. Applicants are required to explain how proposed programs/projects will support particularly impacted populations and address community service gaps or disparities.
FUNDING AVAILABLE: Up to $50,000
TERM: One-year grant period (January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022)
GEOGRAPHIC AREA: Applicants must be based, and serve clients, in one of the following Alabama counties: Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair or Walker.

Welcome to Madeline Cottingham, Bold Goals Community Engagement Coordinator, and Stephanie Butler, Community Allocations & Grants Coordinator. Madeline and Stephanie joined the team in July. We look forward to working with you both!
Who’s Who at UWCA – Employee Spotlight
Dr. Tina Thomas, Community Impact Department Data and Evaluation Manager
Dr. Tina Thomas currently serves as the Data and Evaluation Manager in the Community Impact department at UWCA. She is originally from Brooklyn, New York and has lived in Alabama on and off since 2002. She is a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of the University of Alabama, where she studied cultural and medical anthropology. Tina obtained her doctorate (2016) and master’s degree (2010) from the University of Alabama. In addition, she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Montevallo. She has worked in research on various projects centered on understanding and improving U.S. health and educational disparities. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters and her ornery, elderly dachshund named Sprinkles. Tina has enjoyed learning about all the community organizations that provide much-needed services in our six-county area and looks forward to working more closely with them in the future.
Chris Smith, CPA, New Senior Vice President and CFO, UWCA
Chris Smith joined United Way of Central Alabama on June 1st as Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President. Chris has more than 20 years of experience providing accounting and advisory services to governmental and non-profit organizations throughout the region. In addition, he has experience with federal and state grant compliance requirements, employee benefit plans and audits of manufacturing and health care organizations.
Prior to joining UWCA, Chris was an audit partner at Warren Averett, LLC, where he worked for 17 years and was a leader within the firm’s public sector division. He has earned MBA and BS degrees and has been a Certified Public Accountant in Alabama since 2002.
Chris lives in Hoover with his wife Christie.
Things to Remember
The blackout dates for the UWCA Annual Campaign are September 1st through December 31st annually. As per your partnership agreement with UWCA, no fundraising events or activities, with the exception of grant-writing, are permitted during this time. Thank you for adhering to this policy designed to protect the campaign, which benefits the many missions represented within the UWCA federation.
