Meals on Wheels Needs Your Help to End Senior Hunger.
A $5 Donation or a Few Hours of Your Time Could Make a Big Difference.
It’s not a frequent topic of conversation, but senior hunger is a very real and growing problem. In fact, as the population ages, food insecurity is increasing among the elderly faster than any other group in the nation. And it can lead to malnutrition, sickness and even death.
What is food insecurity?
- It’s not getting enough of the right foods at the right time on a consistent basis.
- It’s being physically prohibited from shopping for food or preparing your own meals.
- It’s being without transportation in a neighborhood where there are no grocery stores or markets.
United Way Meals on Wheels serves homebound seniors throughout Jefferson County five days a week. With a driving force of about 500 volunteers, Meals on Wheels delivered 169,274 meals to approximately 700 clients in the past year. But we are currently operating at capacity and have a waiting list of 500+ potential clients.
To put it simply, we need additional funding and volunteers in order to serve them. And as the baby boomer generation continues to age (quickly becoming the largest single segment of our population), the need for expanded service to reach even more people will only increase.
Please Help Us Feed More Hungry, Homebound Seniors NOW.
The problem is big. But our request is small. Even a $5 donation in support of ending senior hunger will help us feed more people. Or you could volunteer a few hours of your time and help us deliver meals, which is critical to helping us grow our program. This can’t wait.
