Agency Profile: Shelby Emergency Assistance, Inc.
Shelby Emergency Assistance provides temporary assistance with basic needs to individuals and families in crisis caused by job loss, illness, or domestic violence. Types of assistance includes food, financial assistance with utility bills, rent, medical needs, and transportation. The agency also provides educational and support services to improve life skills and promote self-sufficiency.
In 1973 a group of concerned citizens came together to address the basic needs of Montevallo residents. This group became known as the “Montevallo Area Service Center” and provided local services including food, clothing, information and referral. The agency became affiliated with the United Way of Central Alabama in 1977 and expanded services to cover all of Shelby County. In 1987 the agency changed its name to “Shelby Emergency Assistance, Inc.” to better reflect the scope and purpose of the services. In 1992 the agency adopted the mission statement “Helping people move from crisis to self-sufficiency” which continues to guide all program operations.
