Mapping Out Tomorrow
John M. Turner, Jr. 2021 was in large measure a year of transition and progress. We very
United Way of Central Alabama intentionally worked to shift from responding to the challenges of the
Board Chair pandemic to helping agencies and the community recover and get back
on their feet again, while also navigating major challenges along the way.
The people of Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties
faced tremendous hardship in 2021, ranging from devastating tornadoes and
floods to the ongoing pandemic. As always, United Way of Central Alabama
(UWCA) responded -- providing vital relief, picking up the pieces and helping
put lives back together -- offering everything from blood, sweat and vital
resources to financial support and a shoulder to lean on.
Disaster response is a big part of our job. But it’s also our calling. As a human
services organization, UWCA is made up of people and partner agencies
driven to help wherever there’s a need. And we know those needs don’t end
when the dust has settled, the flood waters recede or the news of the day
turns to other matters.
Drew Langloh Beyond answering immediate calls for help, UWCA also actively supports
United Way of Central Alabama long-term recovery. In fact, we expanded our Community Initiatives Department
President and CEO in 2021 to include long-term case management for individuals and families
severely impacted by disaster. And, because the pandemic will continue to be a
factor in our lives for some time to come, we now have an ongoing partnership
