A volunteer information session is set for September 26 to prepare for next year’s tax season
Volunteers are still assisting with extensions and back year returns
United Way is seeking volunteers for the 2017 tax season that begins in January 2018. An information session for those interested in volunteering to prepare tax returns or assist in other ways is scheduled for September 26th at United Way.
Anyone is welcome to volunteer, regardless of a background in taxes or finance. Volunteers are also needed as client intake specialists. Hour-long information sessions are offered at both 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. for the convenience of volunteers. To register for the tax volunteer information session, visit www.uwca.org/events.
For most, tax season ended on April 18, but United Way of Central Alabama’s Free Tax Preparation program will have the doors open year-round for anyone who qualifies for free income tax assistance.
This year, United Way’s Free Tax Preparation program helped prepare a grand total of 3,242 returns, saving clients an estimated $648,400 in tax preparation fees. The only requirement for individuals and families who wish to file taxes is that they have made less than $54,000 during the previous year.
“We are so proud of this year’s Free Tax Preparation results, and can’t thank our volunteers enough,” said Judy Allen, United Way’s Free Tax Preparation director. “We can only hope to continue the program’s success, and help even more tax filers next year.”
In addition to on-site preparation assistance with staff and volunteers, United Way also offers an online resource at MyFreeTaxes.com. The service is free for individuals earning $64,000 or less and utilizes free H&R Block software.
