How UWCA Supports St. Clair County

United Way of Central Alabama provides support to St. Clair County in many ways. Below is one example of how we help those in need.

It’s a New Day for Mark in St. Clair County

During the fall of his sophomore year, Mark was ordered to the St. Clair County Day Program, an innovative Alabama State Department of Youth Services day treatment center for minors. It provides a positive, cost-effective alternative to incarceration, residential treatment and/or hospitalization. Mark’s brother had previously been in legal trouble due to drug use, and Mark appeared to be heading down the same path. The Juvenile Probation Officer hoped that placing him at the Day Program could help change the course of his life.

Mark was placed in New Day Counseling, an outpatient treatment component of the St. Clair County Day Program. Although this program was selected mainly to help him with his drug use, other issues, such as appearance and grooming habits, school performance, anger management and family issues, were identified and addressed, as well. After three months of outpatient counseling, however, Mark continued to test positive for drugs and was placed in a residential treatment facility for 60 days.

Upon his return to the Day Program from the outpatient treatment facility, Mark’s mental and physical health had greatly improved. He appeared healthy, and he was alert and ready to focus on his schoolwork. He was also more open about past issues and was excited about a drug-free future. Mark received group counseling daily, individual counseling once per week and family counseling as needed. He learned to deal with anger issues and daily stresses that could cause him to relapse into using drugs. Mark gladly took an active role in working toward his goals and became part of a team, consisting of his teachers, counselor, probation officer and family to ensure his success.
