Bluff Park Community Bike to School Day - United Way of Central Alabama

DSC_1260-200x300 — Students, parents and volunteers rode bikes May 4 from Shades Crest Baptist Church to Bluff Park Elementary School for National Bike to School Day. The event was sponsored by the school in partnership with the City of Hoover and United Way of Central Alabama’s Healthy Communities Initiative.

More than 100 hundred Bluff Park Elementary students and parents rounded up May 4, for National Bike to School Day. The kids trekked from Shades Crest Baptist Church to Bluff Park Elementary School with escort of parents and Hoover Police Department.

The event was sponsored by the school in partnership with the City of Hoover and United Way of Central Alabama’s Healthy Communities Initiative. The trail of adolescents and volunteers weaved through the backroads of Bluff Park community on two wheels, training wheels, big wheels and even push scooters.

Parents joined in by pushing their toddlers in strollers. Some even turned it into a morning workout by taking a short fun run alongside the biking students.

“The event served as an opportunity to spread awareness about the value and benefits of active transportation, such as biking and walking,” said Nick Sims, Assistant Vice President of Early Childhood Education and Health Communities. United Way’s Healthy Communities Initiative supports Safe Routes to School, a national partnership, to increase safety and physical activity, improve air quality, and promote the design and construction of bike/pedestrian infrastructure. United Way of Central Alabama Inc. supports health and human service programs and agencies that provide solutions for the most important needs in the community.
