It’s that time again—United Way of Central Alabama has ramped up its tax services for the year. UWCA works closely with the Internal Revenue Service and other qualified partners to provide two types of tax services.
The tax drop-off service offers a convenient way for working individuals and families earning $54,000 or less per year to get their taxes done around their schedules. In most cases, tax returns are ready in just seven days. United Way also offers free tax preparation online. For the first year, there is no income limit to file state and federal taxes at www.myfreetaxes.com.
United Way also assists individuals who need to file multiple years of tax returns, as well as those who have filed tax extensions.
When filing your taxes at United Way, tax preparers ask that you bring social security cards for all family members, driver’s license or non-driver’s ID, last year’s federal and state tax returns, W-2 forms, 1099’s for interest, dividends, retirement, Social Security, unemployment or self-employment, 1095 for health insurance coverage, letters or documents from the IRS, childcare receipts – name, address, tax ID# and amount paid, tuition expenses (1098T) and student-loan interest (1098E), receipts for property tax, vehicle tags, charitable gifts, medical, dental, and prescription-drug expenses, and voided check or direct deposit.
Although United Way offers tax services year-round, it is highly recommended you file before the tax deadline, which is April 15. To set up an appointment, call 2-1-1 or 1-888-421-1266.*
Last year, UWCA assisted 3,600 individuals through this program, generating over two million dollars in tax returns.

*Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, United Way’s Free Tax Preparation program is temporarily suspending appointments through the end of March. MyFreeTaxes, the affordable, online tax prep software from United Way and H&R Block, is still available for use from your computer, tablet or smart phone. The deadline for filing and paying federal income tax without interest or penalties has officially been extended to July 15th.
