Since 1952, children across the Birmingham area have come to the Levite Jewish Community Center (LJCC) to stay active, discover new interests and gain confidence in a supportive, community-centered environment.
As a United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) partner agency, LJCC continues to build on that legacy with evolving programs and opportunities – one of which is J Camp.
Each summer, hundreds of campers spend their days at J Camp learning, exploring and connecting with others — making for an experience that encourages them to feel comfortable being themselves.
“We focus on what makes us the same and what makes us different, and we celebrate both,” said Barbara Traweek, LJCC’s Chief Programs Officer.
A Camp Experience for Every Child
J Camp stands out, in part, due to the range of opportunities available in one place. From traditional day camp activities to specialty camps centered on specific interests, families can choose what best fits their child.
Campers might spend part of their day exploring the outdoors, playing sports, creating art or swimming while others dive deeper into programs such as drama, STEM or hands-on building projects. This variety allows children to exercise choice, try new things and tailor each day according to their individual preferences.
“We have so many options,” said Traweek. “You can have a traditional camp experience or focus on specific interests — all right here in one place.”

Building Confidence, Leadership and Lifelong Skills

For many children, camp is their first opportunity to step outside their comfort zone. Whether trying a new activity, making new friends or navigating a full day away from home, each experience helps build confidence.
“Just getting out of the car that first day can be overwhelming,” Traweek said. “But with encouragement from counselors, you see kids realize, ‘I can do this.’ That confidence grows throughout the summer.”
Campers also practice kindness, teamwork and leadership every day. Through shared experiences, they learn how to support one another, solve problems together and celebrate each other’s success.

“It’s validation that we’re doing things the right way,” Traweek said. “Our focus is always on creating a safe, high-quality experience for every camper.”
