In late October, members of UWCA’s J. Mason Davis Leadership Society (JMDLS) participated in the Magic City Classic parade, featuring floats and celebrities as well as the infamous bands and dance teams from Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University. During its mile-long route, parade participants had a front-row view of all the festivities.
Victoria White, United Way Individual Giving Officer working with the J. Mason Davis Society, said, “Since the Magic City Classic is the largest historically Black football game in the country, we wanted to show our support. As a society we want to be present and supportive in the Black community. Participating in this event at the Magic City Classic gave us the opportunity to do just that!”
Members were excited to participate in this long-standing tradition. Many are alumni of the participating schools; and for some, it brought back happy memories of marching in the parade as children. Victoria observed that there was a strong sense of pride in being part of the Magic City Classic. “Hearing and seeing some of the best bands, dance teams and entertainment Birmingham has to offer was incredible. It was a good reminder of how much talent there is within the African American culture,” she said.
Thank you, J. Mason Davis Society Members, for your enthusiasm in making this a memorable event – and for all you do for United Way and the community! The upcoming year will bring more opportunities to connect, celebrate, learn from one another and help those in need.
