When Disaster Strikes, We Are Here

United Way of Central Alabama Assists in Flood Recovery

BIRMINGHAM, AL- United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) is providing urgent assistance to individuals affected by excessive rain and flooding in Central Alabama.

Heavy rains caused deadly flash floods in UWCA’s coverage area on Wednesday, October 6, 2021. According to the National Weather Service, some regions received 6 to 13 inches during the previous several days, while parts of the Birmingham area received 4 to 7 inches in just a few hours on Wednesday alone. Days of heavy rain caused extensive flooding in Central Alabama, killing at least four people. Some of the most severely affected areas included several communities in Shelby County.

Here at UWCA, our hearts and condolences go out to those impacted by this unprecedented disaster. It is in times of need that we discover the full impact of what is means to LIVE UNITED.

During times of disaster, United Way is uniquely positioned to offer on-the-ground disaster response, which includes collecting donations, providing supplies such as food and water, organizing volunteers, and collaborating with local partners to maintain community stability.

UWCA is ready to help the victims of this disaster with their urgent needs. Individuals and families seeking support options can call 2-1-1, UWCA’s information and referral line, to be linked to the proper resources.

Donations will go directly towards assisting individuals and families; any contributions received beyond the needs resulting from this event will be used for future disaster relief within the UWCA’s service area.
