At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), we’re proud to be a place where people love what they do and find meaning in their work. From recent graduates to longtime leaders, every member of our team shares a commitment to helping others and strengthening the community.

From Front Desk to Vice President

When Peggy Murphy joined United Way in March 2001 as a receptionist floater, she was eager to learn and contribute wherever needed. Nearly 25 years later, she now serves as Vice President of E-Services, a role that combines her love of technology with her passion for service.

Peggy, who grew up in Tarrant and is a big fan of all Birmingham sports, attributes her career growth to a combination of curiosity and compassion.

“I’ve always had a servant’s heart and an interest in problem-solving,” Peggy said. “That’s what has kept me here for so long — doing what I love while making a difference.”

Building a Future of Service

Newer to the team, which now totals about 200 employees, Jamyia Shade began her journey with UWCA in 2024 as a receptionist. Known for her warm personality and strong work ethic, she’s already made a positive impression on colleagues and visitors alike.

“I love assisting people and watching them grow from the help they’ve received here,” Jamyia said. “Once, a veteran came back to thank their case manager for helping them get a new home. That moment meant a lot to me.”

Outside of work, Jamyia enjoys exploring downtown Birmingham — from Saturday mornings at Pepper Place to peaceful walks through the Botanical Gardens.

A Place to Learn, Lead and Belong

Though Peggy and Jamyia are at different points in their careers, both describe United Way as a place that encourages growth and collaboration.

“You can grow here, like Mrs. Peggy,” Jamyia said. “There are so many opportunities to learn and develop both personally and professionally.”

Peggy agrees that teamwork is what makes the organization special.

“This is one of the few places where you can work alongside case managers, accountants and community partners all in one day,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see how everything connects to serve people better.”

At United Way of Central Alabama, careers grow alongside community impact as a result of programs and partners that address vital issues ranging from hunger and housing to disabilities and education. Whether you’re just starting out or ready to take the next step, there’s a place for you at UWCA.
