Earlier this month, members of United Way of Central Alabama’s (UWCA) Young Philanthropists’ Society (YPS) came together to volunteer at the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.
The group spent the afternoon packing more than 600 boxes filled with nutritious, shelf-stable food to help families across Central Alabama who need support now and as the holiday season approaches.
The Community Food Bank, a United Way partner agency, serves as a vital lifeline for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
Each year, it distributes millions of pounds of food through a network of more than 230 partner agencies, including food pantries, shelters and children’s programs in 12 counties across Central Alabama.
In 2024 alone, the Food Bank distributed more than 24.5 million pounds of food — the equivalent of about 20.5 million meals.
Volunteers Make Big Things Happen
Volunteers like those from YPS are instrumental in helping the Food Bank fulfill its mission by preparing boxes filled with pantry staples. This includes canned goods and other essentials that reach people directly where they live.
“Packing food boxes was such a tangible reminder of how small acts of service can make a real difference,” said Cal Horton, YPS Steering Committee member. “It felt good knowing that what we were doing would go to people in need.”
Fellow Steering Committee member Cortez Bennett agreed.
“Opportunities like this remind us of why YPS exists: To give back, connect with one another and support the broader community,” he said. “It’s rewarding to see the impact we can make when we come together.”
The need for volunteers remains high as many families continue to rely on food assistance.
“Volunteers play such an important role in helping us reach more people who need support,” said Sharon Haynes, Director of Partner Engagement at the Food Bank. “Every extra set of hands makes a difference.”
