As part of a multi-faceted Back-to-School Campaign, United Way Hands On recently organized a beautification event at Robinson Primary School in Fairfield and volunteers included members and staff from the Birmingham Squadron. The Squadron is an NBA G League team affiliated with the New Orleans Pelicans. They gathered for a morning of impactful community service. Even Commander, the Squadron’s beloved mascot, joined in to add to the day’s vibrant atmosphere.
Leslie Claybrook, the Squadron’s General Manager, finds value for everyone in volunteering. “We’ve partnered with you guys for the last four seasons to get the school year started for students,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to give back.”
Volunteers enthusiastically tackled a variety of tasks, from cleaning walls to sanitizing offices and stairwells. Principal of Robinson Primary, Dr. Melonie Peppins, affectionately known as “Dr. P,” expressed deep gratitude for the support. “The kids are going to be blessed, and I know the teachers are going to be blessed,” she said.
The Squadron volunteers took the initiative to clear out a classroom designated to become a community closet, going above and beyond. The newly created space will hold essential items, such as clothing for distribution to those in need.
Robinson Primary School serves a pivotal role in the community with an enrollment of more than 260 students from kindergarten through second grade.
Through a unique partnership with Cahaba Medical Care, the school offers comprehensive healthcare services on-site. This collaboration ensures prompt attention for students who require medical assistance during school hours, enhancing their well-being and reducing disruption to their education. School staff also benefit from the convenience of having healthcare professionals on campus.
In addition to freshening up the school, the project reinforced community bonds. Cassidy Bonner, a dedicated volunteer with United Way, shared his personal connection to Fairfield. “I met my wife here in Fairfield about 20-something years ago,” he said. “Anytime I get to come back and help, I’ve been back.”
On July 31st, staff from O’Neal Industries and members of UWCA Leaders United will continue setting up the closet for students’ return. Members of the UWCA Young Philanthropists Society will also be assembling backpack kits for distribution to Fairfield students.
