United Way of Central Alabama’s (UWCA) J. Mason Davis Leadership Society (JMDLS), which is focused on African American leadership and philanthropy in our community, partnered with the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club for a day of mentoring. A cornerstone of youth development in Birmingham and an affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club plays a crucial role in nurturing young minds.

The day featured a series of workshops designed to impart practical skills and insights. Highlights included sessions led by members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity on business etiquette, emphasizing the importance of confidence and effective communication in professional settings. “Be intentional when you talk to people; it makes a lasting impression,” advised one fraternity member. Participants also learned practical skills such as tying a tie and proper dining etiquette.

Another workshop, hosted by Regions Bank, focused on financial management. Students engaged with real-life scenarios, learning to budget income, expenses and savings. “It’s important to learn how to budget because we’re going to be doing this one day,” said one student, affirming the workshop’s impact on their understanding of financial responsibility.

Spire also contributed with a workshop aimed at helping students explore potential career paths, providing valuable insights into career planning and setting students up for success.

Through mentorship and practical education, the collaborative efforts of UWCA, JMDLS and the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club are actively shaping a brighter future for Birmingham’s youth. By gaining skills and confidence, participants are empowered to take charge of their education, careers and lives.
