Empowering Central Alabama Students through United Way of Central Alabama’s Back-to-School Initiative

Volunteers preparing a playground for back-to-school

In preparation for the upcoming school year, United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) and United Way Hands On are launching a comprehensive initiative to support children as they return to school. This effort aims to empower students by ensuring they have the necessary tools for a successful academic journey, and we are inviting the community to join in.

Every child deserves access to essential school supplies. United Way Hands On will host a supply drive and is actively seeking donations of backpacks and supplies. Residents of Central Alabama can contribute by purchasing items from an Amazon Wishlist or buying locally and dropping them off at designated locations between July 8th-26th.

By county, the physical drop-off locations include:

  • Blount – Blount County Chamber of Commerce (110 1st Ave E in Oneonta)
  • Chilton – YMCA of Chilton County (405 Ollie Avenue in Clanton)
  • Jefferson – United Way of Central Alabama (3620 8th Avenue S in Birmingham)
  • Shelby – Shelby Emergency Assistance (160 Shoshone Drive in Montevallo)
  • St. Clair – St. Clair County DHR (213 Fox Hollow Boulevard in Pell City)
  • Walker – Chamber of Commerce of Walker County (204 19th E, Suite101 in Jasper)

In addition to providing necessary supplies, UWCA recognizes the importance of creating positive and inspiring learning environments so we’re seeking volunteers to participate in a Back-to-School Beautification week, scheduled for July 15th through 20th. Volunteers will play a vital role in transforming school campuses into safe, engaging spaces where every child can thrive.

Your involvement — whether through donations or volunteering — will have a lasting impact on the lives of local students. Your support ensures that every child in Central Alabama has the opportunity to succeed in the upcoming school year.
