In Blount County, Mitchie Neel is known for her deep commitment to the community she calls home.
Alongside her husband Les, she has spent years supporting United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), connecting local organizations with resources that strengthen lives across her county.
“We believe that meeting human needs is basic to our responsibility as citizens,” Mitchie said. “Helping others is rewarding and a great opportunity.”
Giving Back Through United Way
Mitchie’s connection to United Way began during her career with Blount County Schools when she donated through a workplace campaign. She has supported UWCA ever since.
Les soon became involved as well. He became the first Loaned Executive from Blount County, helping raise awareness and support for UWCA’s work throughout the area.
Today, the couple serves on UWCA’s Blount County Advisory Board, helping guide investments that address local needs and create opportunities for residents.
Through the years, they have seen UWCA partner with local organizations to support students, families and individuals across the community.
When Community Investments Change Lives
One partnership that stands out involved a grant awarded to the Blount County Education Foundation to strengthen high school math instruction. The results exceeded expectations.
Students who struggled in math significantly improved their achievement, and the project’s success later became part of a UWCA campaign.
“There are so many examples of UWCA making a difference that it’s hard to choose just one,” Les said. “The math initiative helped students improve academically, and seeing one of those students featured in the campaign was especially exciting.”
For Mitchie and Les, volunteering is an opportunity to build a stronger community while supporting neighbors in need.
“United Way has helped address many needs in Blount County through its partnerships with local organizations,” Mitchie said. “Seeing those efforts improve lives right here at home is incredibly rewarding.”
Building on Progress
Looking ahead, Mitchie and Les believe continued investment in local programs and partnerships will help the community grow and thrive.
“Blount County can continue to improve and grow in positive ways,” Mitchie said.
Through their leadership, generosity and commitment to service, Mitchie and Les continue to help strengthen Blount County and expand opportunities for the people who call it home.
