Holiday gatherings are largely about the act of family and friends coming together and enjoying each other’s company.
Yet for many seniors, the season can be especially lonely and quiet. The Jimmie Hale Mission, which supports neighbors facing hardship and isolation, helps brighten the holidays for seniors through its long-standing partnership with Meals on Wheels.
Twenty-five years ago, Meals on Wheels noticed that volunteer shortages could leave seniors without meals during the holidays – and ironically short on food during what should be the most festive time of year.
So, the Jimmie Hale Mission stepped in to fill the gap, and the two organizations have worked side by side ever since. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, Meals on Wheels coordinates with the Mission to prepare hundreds of hot meals and deliver them to homebound seniors as a vital reminder that the community hasn’t forgotten them.
This Thanksgiving was no exception, as the tradition continued like clockwork.
Service That Comes Full Circle
For the Jimmie Hale Mission, this effort is deeply meaningful for volunteers, staff and the Mission’s own clients alike. It offers them all a direct way to serve the community. And for Mission clients working to regain stability, preparing meals provides an opportunity to give back in gratitude for the care they have received.
“Such opportunities are important for reestablishing purpose and dignity and helping reconnect our clients with the community,” said Perryn Carroll, Executive Director at the Jimmie Hale Mission.
The meals also hold deep significance for the seniors who receive them. Carroll described food as a “universal love language.” Traditional holiday dishes often stir memories of celebrations shared with family. A warm meal, delivered with care, lets recipients know they are remembered and valued — especially on days when the absence of loved ones weighs heavily.
Preparing these meals is a sizable effort that starts more than a month before each holiday and brings together nearly 150 people. Staff manage spreadsheets, cook, and coordinate logistics, attending to countless details to keep everything running smoothly.
Volunteers then pack, serve, and deliver each meal, ensuring it reaches each senior with care. Children also participate by coloring placemats, a reminder that generosity and service can start at any age.
Door to Door, Generation to Generation
The tradition has left lasting impressions on generations of volunteers.
Jimmie Hale Mission’s Executive Director, Perryn Carroll, and her family have made the holiday Meals on Wheels part of their family tradition for more than 20 years since their children were toddlers and in grade school.
When their oldest came home for Thanksgiving his freshman year of college, he bounded through the door, dropped his sack of dirty clothes, hugged his mom and asked, “We are delivering meals tomorrow, aren’t we?”
That is how seeds of compassion are planted by holiday meal deliveries and how much those deliveries mean, not only to the recipients, but also to the volunteers that make sure they arrive year after year.
Meals on Wheels shares this sense of purpose
