On a beautiful evening in early October, Dr. Regina Thompson, Superintendent of Fairfield City Schools addressed members of the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society (JMDLS) of United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA). They gathered at the Woodlawn Theatre in Birmingham to kick off the group’s Annual Campaign for UWCA. This year’s campaign theme, “WHY WE UNITE” focuses on the power of our collective impact when we come together and address issues we all care about.
“We all want to help,” said Thompson, “But it’s not just about helping; it’s about making sure you help in a meaningful and sustainable way.”
Providing Support Where We Need It Most
Along with JMDLS Steering Committee members Val Williams, Jimmie Washington, Ike Mathews and Ken Davis, Thompson highlighted the impactful work happening in Fairfield thanks to UWCA’s partnership. Fairfield City Schools now serve as “one-stop-shops,” providing resources including food pantries, clothing closets, medical clinics, mental health services and more. This is a result of UWCA’s inCommunity initiative to expand access to services such and centralize them on school campuses.
A Focus on Education
JMDLS brings together African American changemakers from across Central Alabama for networking, service and community engagement. A major focus of the group centers on education for all.
“We exist to elevate and empower African American leadership and philanthropy in Central Alabama,” said Val Williams, JMDLS Steering Committee member. “Through strategic giving, mentorship and civic engagement, we are building a network of changemakers who are committed to shaping a more equitable future— starting right here in our own community.”

By combining convenient access to essential services through UWCA’s inCommunity initiative with the leadership and vision of educators like Dr. Thompson, Fairfield City Schools are becoming a powerful example of what’s possible when communities unite. These partnerships are not only strengthening families and improving educational outcomes; they’re inspiring students to dream bigger and believe in their potential. The J. Mason Davis Leadership Society continues to champion this work, proving that strategic collaboration and shared purpose can create lasting, meaningful change.
