LEARN United Equips Professionals to Speak with Purpose

Public speaking is one of the most powerful tools a nonprofit leader can develop. That is why United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) brought together professionals from across our region for an energizing training session as part of its LEARN United series.

Hosted at America’s First Federal Credit Union’s headquarters in downtown Birmingham, the session was led by communications expert Ronda Robinson. It focused on building clarity, confidence and connection when speaking to any audience.

“Every conversation is a chance to share your mission,” said Ronda. “The key is being intentional with your words and making your message stick.”

Practical Tools for Real-World Impact

LEARN United equips nonprofit staff with practical skills they can apply right away. In this workshop, participants practiced storytelling, developed elevator pitches and learned how to adapt their message for a variety of audiences.

Because session attendees represent United Way partner agencies and serve in public-facing roles, knowing how to speak clearly about their agencies’ mission is essential. Whether addressing volunteers, meeting with donors or advocating for services, the ability to communicate with purpose can make a lasting impact.

Rhonda shared strategies to help participants keep their elevator pitch concise, structured and memorable. She emphasized preparation and simplicity by avoiding jargon, staying focused and speaking with intention.

Her recommended framework included the following.

  • Start with a hook to grab attention. This could be a surprising fact, a story or a question.
  • Outline the problem the organization addresses in clear and relatable terms.
  • Offer a solution by showing how the work makes a measurable difference.
  • End with a call to action that tells the audience exactly what they can do next, including offering your email or phone number.

Confidence That Carries Forward

Participants practiced shaping their own messages by using this structure; and they learned how to tailor it for different settings. Ronda encouraged each attendee to lead with passion and speak with clarity and authenticity.

“Even if you only have 30 seconds, you can still say something meaningful,” she said. “When you speak from the heart and stay focused, people listen.”

Participants walked away better equipped to communicate their work in ways that inform, engage and inspire.

“I’ve always been nervous speaking in front of groups, but this session gave me tools I can actually use,” said one participant. “I left already feeling more confident and prepared.”
