Community Food Bank of Central Alabama

A grant of $100,000 from the Greater Birmingham Foundation made it possible for the Food Bank to open its doors on December 1, 1982. At that time, service was provided to Jefferson, Shelby and Walker counties. The planning was done by volunteers from the community and the planning department of United Way of Central Alabama. Over the last 40 years, the number of counties served by the food bank has increased from 3 to 12 and the number of agencies distributing food in central Alabama has increased from 30 to 260.

The mission of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is to feed people in need today and foster collaborative solutions to end hunger tomorrow. CFB accomplishes this mission by supplying millions of meals per year to over 260 food pantries, shelters and children’s programs in 12 counties in central Alabama. Their aim is to ensure people in need can access emergency food near where they live. When they identify a gap in this network that leaves specific populations vulnerable to hunger, they step in with direct service meal programs.

CFB provides fresh produce and groceries to seniors, children at risk of hunger during school breaks, patients facing chronic illness, first-time mothers and others in need. For easy access, they deliver to key locations like schools, senior housing facilities, medical clinics, and more. The Community Food Bank also incubates social enterprises that promote nutrition, prevents wholesome food from going to waste and tests new initiatives that go beyond charity to create healthy food access for all. Each year, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama distributes over 16 million nutritious meals in Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Walker, and Winston counties.
