Alabama summers are no joke. High temperatures and relentless humidity can put your health at risk – a concern especially for seniors, children, people with chronic health conditions and those experiencing homelessness.
At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), we are here to help you and your family stay safe and cool all summer long.
Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Heat exhaustion happens when your body loses too much water and salt through sweating. According to the CDC, symptoms include fatigue, heavy sweating and clammy skin. Heatstroke is more severe. Warning signs include confusion, nausea, headache and a body temperature of 103 degrees or higher. If you suspect heatstroke, seek medical attention immediately.

- Shelby County: Visit Shelby County EMA or call local libraries and senior centers, including those in Pelham, Alabaster and Columbiana.
- St. Clair County: See announcements from St. Clair County EMA. Libraries and civic centers in Pell City and Ashville are often designated.
- Walker County: Visit Walker County EMA or check with local churches and the Jasper Civic Center.
- Chilton County: Contact Chilton County EMA or check with the YMCA of Chilton County or senior centers in Clanton and Jemison.
