United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is gearing up for the 2017 tax season by recruiting volunteers to both prepare tax returns and serve as greeters to ensure tax filers have all of their documents needed to complete their returns. In 2016, United Way’s program prepared nearly 4,000 free tax returns for low-to-moderate income individuals, many of whom return year after year to take advantage of the free service. Training to become an IRS certified volunteer tax preparers is free, takes 8 hours and will begin in mid-November. Volunteer tax greeters simply take an on-line, open book test to become IRS certified to participate as a volunteer in the program. For information click here
