March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the women whose leadership, resilience and vision continue to shape the Central Alabama community. At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), that impact shows up every day through Women United, a donor network committed to philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism.
In the spirit of the month, we sat down with a few Women United members who are making a difference through their involvement with UWCA. In the following Q&A, they share what inspired them to join, what Women’s History Month means to them and a little about who they are beyond their professional titles.
DeKayla Johnson, Engineer III, Alabama Power Company
Q: What inspired you to join Women United and how has being part of this group impacted you personally or professionally?
A: I was inspired to join Women United during my time as a Loaned Executive. I saw it not only as an opportunity to stay connected with those that I’d built relationships with but to continue to stay involved in the meaningful work that United Way is doing in the community.
Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
A: Women’s History Month to me is a wonderful time to simply empower and appreciate women for the incredible creatures they are.
Q: Anything additional about yourself you would like to share (fun fact, hobbies, etc.)
A: I like to pat myself on the back for working in the male dominated field of engineering.

Q: What inspired you to join Women United and how has being part of this group impacted you personally or professionally?
A: I was inspired to join Women United primarily because of the organization’s emphasis on philanthropy, connection and service to our community. Being a part of Women United has been so rewarding. I have had an opportunity to connect with other passionate and like-minded women, engage in meaningful community outreach projects and gain insight into the issues impacting our community.
Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
A: Women’s History Month is about celebrating the strength, leadership and influence of women, not only in our personal lives, but in our communities. It’s a moment to recognize our progress and reflect on the work that remains. The most impactful people in my life have been the women who raised me or mentored me. Their strength and support have shaped who I am today. This month is a reminder to honor their impact while continuing to uplift and invest in women as leaders.
Q: Anything additional about yourself you would like to share (fun fact, hobbies, etc.)
A: I live in Hoover with my husband and dogs. I love traveling, concerts and reading.
Stephanie Smith, Investment Operations Specialist, Regions Bank
Q: What inspired you to join Women United and how has being part of this group impacted you personally or professionally?
A: Women United gave me the opportunity to connect with other professional women outside of my normal sphere of influence. I was inspired to join their mission of education and community impact. Joining Women United allowed me to foster key relationships, aid in community development through home construction, while also advancing knowledge of early education gaps and mental wellness initiatives.
Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
A: Women’s History Month gives me an opportunity to reflect on the contributions women have made to impact our country, our culture and our history. From small, everyday actions to barrier-breaking achievements, these contributions work in tandem to drive our communities and society toward a better future while providing inspiration and role models for the next generation.
