The Tocqueville Society Award, established in 1987, recognizes individuals and families who demonstrate exceptional volunteer service and financial commitment to United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA). This prestigious honor celebrates those whose philanthropy and leadership have created meaningful, lasting change in our community.
Leaving a Legacy of Impact
The 2025 Tocqueville Society Award was proudly presented to Mary Ruth and Charles Caldwell, two extraordinary leaders whose combined efforts have profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals. As members of the Tocqueville Society since 2001, the Caldwells have generously contributed both financially and through hands-on volunteer leadership – investing their time, expertise and passion to uplift those around them.
Tocqueville Society Co-chairs Stephen and Missy Armstrong presented the award, remarking on the Caldwells’ longtime dedication to United Way. “Mary Ruth and Charles are well-deserved recipients of this award,” said Stephen Armstrong. “They have supported our United Way for over 20 years.”
A Lifetime of Service
Charles Caldwell has served on the UWCA Board of Directors. He was the 2006 Tocqueville Chair and is currently a member of the Forever United Campaign Cabinet. Both Charles and Mary Ruth are Tocqueville Legacy Circle members and continue to spread their impact throughout the community beyond United Way.
In addition to their incredible dedication to UWCA, the Caldwells also support several other community organizations, including Children’s of Alabama, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
Through their unwavering support and passion for service, Mary Ruth and Charles Caldwell have made a lasting impact on Central Alabama. Their generosity, leadership and tireless advocacy inspire others to follow their example, ensuring that their legacy of service will continue to strengthen our community for years to come.
