United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) recently partnered with Ashley Furniture and Birmingham City Schools for Ashley’s “Hope to Dream” event, bringing early holiday cheer to 30 Birmingham City School scholars (and one newborn sibling)! Through the event, UWCA staff helped to assist Santa with hand-delivered gifts as Ashley Furniture surprised the scholars with new beds, mattresses and other needs. Families also enjoyed dinner together and a fun-filled evening at the McWane Science Center, making it a truly special night for everyone involved.

Supporting a Basic Need
“The Hope to Dream event directly transforms a child’s everyday life by providing something foundational yet often overlooked — a safe, comfortable place to sleep,” said Zia Trone of Ashley Furniture Alabama. “For many of these children, receiving a bed means improved rest, better focus at school and a greater sense of stability and dignity at home. This addresses an immediate, real need – one that affects a child’s physical health, emotional well-being and ability to thrive. It’s not just a gift; it’s a turning point that supports healthier routines and brighter futures.”
Hope To Dream is based on the belief that every child deserves a good night’s sleep and a bed to call their own. Since its inception in 2010, more than 190,000 children have received the gift of a new bed. By providing these essential sleep resources, Hope to Dream aims to set children on the path to a healthier and more productive life.

Starting the Year in Comfort
UWCA connected BCS students and their families, who had been selected by their counselors and teachers, to the Hope to Dream event and helped organize the magic-filled day.
“We are beyond grateful for our partnership with Hope to Dream, Ashley Furniture and United Way of Central Alabama,” said Dr. Mark Sullivan, Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools. “Their donation of 30 brand-new beds will ensure our students are able to sleep comfortably every night. A good night’s rest is key to staying focused, being fully engaged in the classroom and flourishing academically. The generous donation will also allow our families to enter the holiday season with not only comfort but a renewed sense of hope from their community,” he said.
