Helping Nonprofits Sharpen Fiscal Efficiency and Transparency

United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) recently launched the first session of a three-part financial management training series under its LEARN United program.

This is a popular initiative designed to answer the unique needs of nonprofit staff through best practices and customized training for growth, sustainability and leadership of their organizations.

Hosted at Regions Bank headquarters, the seminar brought together both new and returning participants from United Way’s nonprofit professional development programs. The sessions are being led by longtime corporate partner Regions Bank, which continues to demonstrate its commitment to the community through volunteerism and support of education efforts such as this.

For this series on core financial skills, Regions has teamed up with UWCA’s Financial Stability Services.

Participants joined United Way and Regions for a LEARN United session covering financial skills.

Topics covered include:

A professionally dressed man smiles as he speaks with a woman across a desk in an office setting. A computer monitor displays a flyer for the "Savings for Seniors" program. The scene reflects supportive financial counseling services offered by United Way of Central Alabama.

LEARN United, which stands for Leadership Education and Readiness for Nonprofits, was created and launched by UWCA in 2024 to provide free training to agencies that have received United Way funding. It’s one more way United Way is investing in the long-term success of nonprofits across Central Alabama.

“I recognize that professional development isn’t always available or accessible to nonprofit professionals,” said Katrina Watson, Senior Vice President of Community Impact at United Way. “As a leader of nonprofits in the community, we believe it’s our responsibility to create opportunities to connect, grow and learn from the best.”

Attendees heard from Regions’ Richard Phillips, who currently serves as the Credit Products Team Leader at Regions Bank’s Government, Institutional and Nonprofit Banking department. Phillips emphasized the importance of transparent financial practices, accountability and clear communication when managing donor dollars.

“I’ve been in your shoes,” said Phillips, a 10-year Regions employee with previous nonprofit experience of his own. “You’re here because you care. You want your organizations to be well represented, and you understand how important the finances are.”

One of the key takeaways from the session was the practical importance of financial transparency. Donors and funders expect clear reporting on how resources are used, the outcomes they support and the results they produce. The session reinforced that strong financial practices aren’t just technical; they’re essential to earning trust, ensuring accountability and supporting long-term viability.

More Learning Ahead with LEARN United

Two more sessions are scheduled in this LEARN United series, continuing United Way’s commitment to providing relevant, real-world training that strengthens the nonprofit sector. The next session will take place on May 16th. Amanda Saint of Regions — and board treasurer for partner agency Better Basics — will lead the session, sharing expert insights on financial stewardship and board engagement.
