The Tocqueville Society Award, established in 1987, recognizes individuals and families who demonstrate exceptional volunteer service and financial commitment to United Way of Central Alabama. This prestigious honor celebrates those whose philanthropy and leadership have created meaningful, lasting change in our community.

The 2024 Tocqueville Society Award was proudly presented to Linda and Jeff Stone, two extraordinary leaders whose combined efforts have profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals. As members of the Tocqueville Society since 2008, the Stones have generously contributed both financially and through hands-on volunteer leadership — investing their time, expertise and passion to uplift those around them.

The award was presented by Tocqueville Society Co-chairs Kelly and Ron Morrison, who said, “The Stones are an extraordinary example of servant leadership. Their dedication inspires us all.”

Linda Stone: A Heart for Healing and for Service

Linda Stone has been a pillar of the Central Alabama community for decades. She joined Children’s of Alabama Over the Mountain Pediatrics as a partner in 1986, where she spent more than 30 years improving the health and well-being of countless children and families as a pediatrician. Now retired, Linda remains a vital force in the community, serving on multiple boards and staying active in organizations such as the Junior League, where she also participates in the choir.

But that’s not all. Linda has been a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels since 2018, delivering food twice a week to homebound seniors. Her commitment to service is evident in everything she does, and her strong desire to make a difference in people’s lives shines brightly in her volunteer work and leadership roles.

“Linda’s impact extends far beyond the medical field,” said Kelly Morrison. “She is a dynamic force in our community, and her passion for service is inspiring to all who know her.”

Jeff Stone: A Continuum of Leadership and Community Impact

Jeff Stone, retired Executive Vice President of Brasfield & Gorrie, has been equally committed to making a difference in Central Alabama. His involvement with United Way began more than 40 years ago, and he and Linda have been steadfast supporters of the organization ever since.

Jeff’s leadership role within United Way has been particularly significant. In 2015, as Chair of the Tocqueville Society, he led a remarkable membership expansion, welcoming more than 100 new members in a single year, a milestone that remains one of the most impressive in the organization’s history. Jeff also served as Campaign Chair in 2019 and continues his leadership in the community as the President Elect of the Rotary Club of Birmingham.

Beyond his role with the Tocqueville Society, Jeff served as the Legacy Gifts Chair for four years, playing a pivotal role on the Legacy Gift Committee and driving the success of the Forever United Campaign. This campaign, focused on increasing UWCA’s endowment to $100 million or more, was conceived to ensure United Way’s long-term financial strength and ability to respond to evolving community needs for generations to come. Under Jeff’s guidance, and with the generosity of donors, the Legacy Society has contributed nearly $50 million to the endowment in just four years.

“Jeff is no stranger to a challenge,” said Kelly Morrison. “His dedication to making an impact drives him in every role he takes on, and his leadership continues to shape our community for the better.”

A Shared Commitment to Service

Reflecting on their longstanding support of United Way, Jeff summed up their shared commitment by saying, “We were both called to serve. United Way is a wonderful organization with so many ways to help. It’s truly bigger than any of us.”

Through their unwavering dedication, Linda and Jeff Stone have made a profound impact on Central Alabama. Their generosity, leadership and tireless advocacy inspire others to follow their example, ensuring that their legacy of service will continue to strengthen our community for years to come.
