Storytime recently became even more meaningful for children at two Success By 6 sites, thanks to members of the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society (JMDLS). Volunteers from the United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) donor network spent the morning reading aloud to students — and left behind books so the children could continue enjoying the stories long after the visit.
JMDLS honors the legacy of J. Mason Davis, one of Birmingham’s most respected attorneys and the first African American Chair of UWCA’s Board of Directors. The group unites African American leaders who are dedicated to advancing diversity, equity and opportunity, often through efforts that highlight the power of literacy.
“Mr. Davis has a passion for literacy, especially in youth,” said Lauren Barnacastle, Director of Individual Giving at UWCA. “Because of this, many of our J. Mason Davis Leadership Society volunteer events revolve around literacy to honor his impact.”
That focus connects directly with United Way’s Success By 6 program, which helps prepare young children for kindergarten, making storytime not just fun, but a building block for future success.
Bringing Stories to Life in the Classroom
Research shows that reading to children at an early age supports healthy brain development by strengthening visual imagery, story comprehension and vocabulary. It also fosters social and emotional growth, which is why opportunities to read aloud in the classroom are so valuable.
At both Life Changers Preschool in Forestdale and Beautiful Minds Childcare Center in Bessemer, JMDLS Steering Committee Members Cleo Crawford of Regions, Jasmine Wright of Protective Life and Val Williams of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, read Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems and Summer Fun by Sara Shapiro to a room full of eager listeners.
“It might feel simple to sit and read a couple of stories, but to a child it can be the highlight of their day,” Jasmine said. “That is the kind of memory that sticks with them.”
Success By 6 Builds Strong Foundations
For more than 20 years, Success By 6 has continued to raise Pre-K standards by providing teacher training, enhancing classrooms with educational resources and engaging parents in their children’s learning. In 2024 alone, Success By 6 served more than 2,300 children.
“Early learning shapes everything that comes after,” said Ladye Franklin, Success By 6’s School Readiness Specialist, who was present for the volunteer opportunity. “When children are confident walking into kindergarten, they are better prepared to succeed. That is why partnerships like this matter so much.”
By sharing the love of reading, J. Mason Davis Leadership Society is helping children across Central Alabama build the foundation for a strong start in school and in life.
