Seniors, individuals with disabilities + caregivers have a lifeline—1-800-AGE-LINE

As someone who takes care of my in-laws in their mid-80s, there is one number we have on speed dial—1-800-AGE-LINE (243-5463). Here’s why it’s so important and how it can help seniors you know and care for in Jefferson County.

A RESOURCE HUB

1-800-AGE-LINE and its website help seniors access life-enhancing resources offered in Jefferson County and throughout the state. With just one phone call, you can help your loved ones with questions about Medicare, Social Security and a myriad of issues and services. Continue reading to learn more.

This important number is made possible by the United Way Area Agency on Aging (UWAAA)  through the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), which serves seniors, people of all ages with disabilities and their caregivers in their search for assistance programs.

HOW IT WORKS

If you need help securing a nutritious meal, legal counseling or counseling on Medicare plans or prescription assistance, follow these steps:

  • Visit the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of UWAAA for detailed descriptions of programs and services.
  • Call 1-800-AGE-LINE (1-800-243-5463) for live assistance.
  • Visit United Way of Central Alabama’s office at 3600 8th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35222, Monday through Friday from 8AM to 4:30PM. Appointments and walk-ins accepted. By appointment only due to COVID.

ADRC offers access to resources in 35 different categories. Some include:

  • Housing
  • In-Home Care
  • Dental Clinics
  • Prescription Drug Assistance
  • Vision and Hearing Resources
  • Transportation

Trained specialists assess your needs and concerns, then provide the appropriate information, referrals and guidance to resolve your questions.

Since January 1, 2020, staff have completed over 2,091 ADRC screening assessments and handled over 3,000 quick calls for assistance. They are prepared to help you.
